Freshers’ Week is a big moment – new friends, new places, new freedom. It’s all about enjoying yourself and making the most of student life. But with so much going on, it’s easy to get carried away. At Wirral Ways, we want you to have a brilliant time while also looking after yourself and your mates.

Here are some simple tips to help you stay safe and well during Freshers’.

Look out for each other

  • Go out together, come home together. Make a plan for how you’ll get back before you head out.
  • Share your location with a friend so someone knows where you are.
  • If someone looks uncomfortable or unwell, check in – even if you don’t know them.

Spiking – stay aware

Spiking can happen through drinks, injections, or even food. It’s never the victim’s fault, and you can’t always prevent it. But you can:

  • Keep an eye on your drink – don’t leave it unattended.
  • Use a bottle stopper or cover if you have one.
  • Look out for your friends and watch for sudden changes in behaviour.
  • If you or someone else starts to feel strange, confused, or overly drunk after a small amount of alcohol, tell venue staff straight away and get medical help.

Drinking – pace yourself

  • Go low and slow. Sip drinks and alternate with water or soft drinks.
  • Eat before you go out and keep snacks handy – it makes a big difference.
  • Set a limit and stick to it. Knowing your limit isn’t boring, it’s smart.
  • Remember: shots and doubles add up quicker than you think.

Drugs – know the risks

Some people will experiment during Freshers’. If that’s you, stay as safe as possible:

  • Start low, go slow. Take a small amount first and wait – you can always take more, but you can’t take less.
  • Don’t mix drugs with alcohol or each other – it increases risks.
  • Stay hydrated, but don’t overdo it. Sip water regularly.
  • If you don’t feel right, ask for help. Call 999 in an emergency.

Staying hydrated

  • Aim for a glass of water every hour if you’re drinking or using drugs.
  • Have a water bottle with you – most clubs and bars will refill it for free.
  • Watch out for energy drinks; they can mask how drunk or tired you really are.

Getting home safely

  • Save the number of a licensed taxi firm in your phone.
  • Avoid walking alone at night if you can. Stick to well-lit, busy streets.
  • Keep some money aside for the journey home – don’t rely on contactless if your phone might run out of charge.

Freshers’ Week is about enjoying yourself, not putting yourself at risk. By taking it easy, staying hydrated, and looking out for your mates, you’ll remember the fun – not the fallout.

If you ever want to talk about alcohol, drugs, or your wellbeing, Wirral Ways is here for you. No judgement, just support.
