Recovery is about more than stopping something. For many people, it’s about rebuilding confidence, finding purpose, and reconnecting with who they are.
That’s why Wirral Ways works closely with the Spider Project, an award-winning creative arts and wellbeing recovery project that has been supporting people on Wirral since 2007.
The Spider Project offers a compassionate, welcoming space where recovery is nurtured through creativity, connection, and personal growth.
What is the Spider Project?
The Spider Project is a community-based recovery programme built around creative arts, wellbeing, and empowerment.
They recognise that recovery and mental wellbeing journeys can be complex and challenging. Their mission is to support people to move forward by offering:
- Creative arts courses
- Accredited learning opportunities
- Holistic therapies
- Physical exercise and wellbeing sessions
Everything they do is rooted in community, trust, honesty, and respect.
People are supported as individuals, not defined by their past.
Creativity, learning, and wellbeing
A key part of the Spider Project is helping people rediscover confidence and belief in themselves.
Participants can access accredited educational courses through Open Awards, giving them the opportunity to gain recognised qualifications in a supportive and encouraging environment.
Alongside learning, creative and wellbeing activities help people:
- Build routine and structure
- Express themselves safely
- Improve confidence and motivation
- Strengthen physical and emotional wellbeing
- Reconnect socially with others who understand recovery
It’s not about perfection. It’s about progress.
A values-led approach to recovery
At the heart of the Spider Project is a belief that everyone has value.
The project is committed to accessibility and inclusion, creating a space where people from all backgrounds feel welcomed, respected, and supported.
Each person is met with compassion and empathy, with support shaped around where they are now and what they need to move forward.
Who is the Spider Project for?
The Spider Project is designed to support adults who feel ready to take a positive step forward in their recovery and wellbeing.
It may be right for you if you:
- Are aged 18 or over
- Have past experiences of substance use and/or mental health challenges
- Are in a stable place in your recovery and looking to move forward
- Would benefit from creativity, structure, and supportive peer connections
A note about recovery boundaries
To help keep the space safe and supportive for everyone, the Spider Project asks that people with a history of alcohol or drug dependency are abstinent while engaging with the programme.
This is about protecting the wellbeing of the whole community and supporting positive, sustainable recovery.
If you’re unsure whether now feels like the right time, a conversation with your Wirral Ways worker can help you explore your options.
Working in partnership
The Spider Project works closely with a range of local and regional partners to support recovery, wellbeing, and opportunity, including:
- Wirral Ways
- Wirral Council
- Cheshire & Wirral Partnership
- Wirral Citizens Advice
- Wirral Met College
- Liverpool John Moores University
- Education and Skills Funding Agency
- Wirral Change
These partnerships help ensure people can access the right support, at the right time, in the right way.
Taking the next step
If you feel the Spider Project could support you to move forward, referrals are made through Wirral Ways.
Your worker can:
- Talk through what the Spider Project offers
- Explore whether it feels like a good fit for you
- Support you to make a referral when the time feels right
A referral is not a commitment. It’s simply an opportunity to explore what might help you take your next step.
Moving forward, together
Recovery is not a straight line, and it doesn’t stop with treatment.
The Spider Project exists to support that next chapter, helping people grow confidence, rediscover purpose, and move forward through creativity, community, and care.
If you’re ready to explore what’s next, speak to your Wirral Ways worker and ask about the Spider Project.
