After accessing support from Wirral Ways for his alcohol use, Ben began making steady changes that helped him regain stability, restore his career and look ahead to the future with confidence. His story is a reminder that recovery is possible, and that with the right support, people can go on to rebuild every part of their lives.
When Ben, who is in his mid-30s, came into service in February 2025, he was looking for support with his alcohol use and a way to move forward.
From the beginning, Ben showed a real commitment to change. While continuing to engage with Wirral Ways, he was prescribed relapse prevention medication and also began reducing his drinking through his own efforts. That combination of support, determination and consistency helped him build strong foundations for recovery.
Reflecting on that time, Ben said: “I knew things couldn’t carry on as they were. I wanted to get control back, not just for myself, but for my family and my future.”
Over time, Ben continued to make positive progress and successfully completed six months with our Aftercare Team. Throughout that period, he maintained his sobriety and worked hard to create a more stable life for himself and his family.
A big part of Ben’s journey has been rebuilding his working life.
Ben works as a self-employed quantity surveyor and, as his recovery progressed, he was able to restore his career and continue working successfully from home. As his confidence has grown, so has his ambition for the future.
He is now planning to grow his business and recruit a member of staff to help meet demand. It is a significant step forward and a clear reflection of how much progress he has made.
Ben said: “As I started to feel more like myself again, everything else started to improve too. I was able to focus on work properly, rebuild my confidence and start thinking ahead again.”
A member of the team said: “We have helped him maintain his sobriety, regain his business and now he wants to create an opportunity for somebody else who has struggled like him.”
Ben has also built greater stability in his personal life.
Shared care of his children is going well and remains amicable, helping to create a positive and supportive family environment. He reported no issues over Christmas and New Year, and was able to enjoy valuable time with his family, including taking his children away a few days after Christmas.
These moments matter. Recovery is not just about stopping harmful patterns. It is also about being able to enjoy everyday life again, rebuild relationships and feel present for the people who matter most.
Speaking about this, Ben said: “The biggest difference is in the everyday things. Being present, enjoying time with my children and feeling more settled in myself has meant everything.”
One of the most powerful parts of Ben’s story is his desire to support others.
During his discharge conversation, Ben shared that as his company continues to grow, he would like to offer an opportunity in the future to one of our clients. Having been in that position himself, he understands how important it can be when someone is given a chance.
Ben said: “I know how much it means when someone believes in you and gives you an opportunity. If I can do that for somebody else in the future, I’d really like to.”
His story shows how recovery can create a ripple effect. With the right support, people do not just change their own lives, they can also go on to help others change theirs.
Ben’s journey is a strong example of what can happen when someone is supported to make change in a way that works for them. Through ongoing engagement, relapse prevention support and his own determination, he has maintained his recovery, restored his career and started building towards an even brighter future.
We are incredibly proud of everything Ben has achieved and wish him all the best for what comes next.
