Having a baby is a big deal. Whether it was planned or not, life after birth can feel overwhelming, and contraception might not be the first thing on your mind. But it is worth thinking about sooner than you might expect.

Fertility can return as early as 21 days after giving birth. That is why Sexual Health Wirral has launched a new campaign, Think…Contraception…before 21 days!, to help people plan ahead and feel confident about their options.

Why does it matter?

Many people assume it takes a while for fertility to return after having a baby. In reality, it can happen quickly, even if you are breastfeeding or your periods have not yet returned. Planning ahead means you are not caught off guard, and it means you can choose the option that works best for you rather than making a rushed decision.

Where can you get advice and support?

You do not have to go to a specialist clinic to start the conversation. Contraception advice is available from a range of health professionals across Wirral:

  • Midwives can talk to you before you leave hospital and can provide some contraception options including pills, the injection, and coils
  • Health visitors can offer advice and point you in the right direction
  • GPs across Wirral work in partnership with Sexual Health Wirral to provide long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) such as implants and coils at local surgeries
  • Community pharmacies can provide emergency contraception free of charge, subject to eligibility
  • Sexual Health Wirral clinics offer the full range of contraception with skilled, non-judgemental clinicians

What contraception is available?

Sexual Health Wirral offer a wide range of free contraception options, so whatever suits your body and your life, there is something available. These include:

  • Combined oral contraceptive pill (COC)
  • Progestogen-only pill (POP)
  • Contraceptive implant
  • Contraceptive injection
  • Contraceptive patch
  • Vaginal ring
  • Intrauterine device (IUD, non-hormonal coil)
  • Intrauterine system (IUS, hormonal coil)
  • Diaphragms and caps
  • Emergency contraception
  • Condoms

Not sure which is right for you? The Sexual Health Wirral team can help you think it through and make an informed choice, with no pressure and no judgement.
