Earlier this month, Nick walked into the Mayor’s office and received recognition that many would take for granted. But for him, it was the culmination of something remarkable: a journey from having virtually no confidence to being named as one of just 20 students selected from a population of 1,500 across all subjects.

This is what recovery and real support can look like.

Where it started

When Nick first came to Wirral Ways, he couldn’t read or write and felt unfit. The barriers that stood between him and the kind of life he wanted to live felt insurmountable. It’s easy to imagine how isolating that must have felt, how the shame and frustration could consume you. Nick completed our Community Rehab programme and then received support from our After Care Team and Employment and Training Team at Recovery Works.

But what happened next is what we see time and time again at Wirral Ways. When someone reaches out for help, when they’re ready to change, we show up. We don’t judge. We listen. We support.

The turning point

Nick’s journey took a real turn when he connected with both our team at Wirral Ways and tutors at college who believed in him. What they saw wasn’t someone defined by their struggle. They saw potential. They saw someone who was willing to try.

Deborah Roberts, Nick’s tutor, puts it perfectly in her nomination for the award:

“Nick arrived in December with very little confidence, but since then he has shown great commitment and determination. He is keen to learn, has excellent attendance, and approaches the course with a positive attitude. Over time, Nick’s confidence has grown significantly, and he is always willing to help others, making him a valued and supportive member of the group.”

That’s not just academic progress. That’s a transformation. From struggling alone to supporting others. From invisible to valued. From doubting himself to being someone people can rely on.

What real support looks like

What strikes us most about Nick’s story is how it shows what’s possible when people work together. It wasn’t just Wirral Ways. It wasn’t just the college. It was the two combining their efforts, each bringing something different. The staff here provided the recovery support, the stability, the belief. The tutors provided the education, the structure, the day-to-day encouragement.

That’s how we help people genuinely move forward. We don’t work in isolation. We partner with employers, colleges, health services, and community organisations because real change happens when everyone around you is pulling in the same direction.

The achievement

On the day the Mayor presented Nick with his award, he was genuinely chuffed. Grateful too, particularly to the staff at Wirral Ways and his tutors. But if you’d heard him speaking to people that day, you’d have heard something even more important: belief in himself. The confidence that comes from knowing you can do hard things. The proof that change is possible.

Being selected as one of 20 students out of 1,500 isn’t just about academic ability. It’s about showing up, putting in the work, developing as a person, and contributing positively to those around you. Nick did all of that.

What this means

Stories like Nick’s matter. Not because they’re unusual, but because they’re possible. They’re possible because recovery isn’t a fairy tale. It’s real work, supported by real people who care and who know how to help.

We see people like Nick all the time. People who arrive believing they’ve run out of chances. People carrying the weight of barriers that feel too heavy to move. And we see them change. Not overnight. Not without effort. But genuinely, lastingly, powerfully.

Nick’s story is about resilience, yes. It’s about determination and commitment. But it’s also about what happens when someone believes in you. When you’re offered not just a service but genuine support. When people work together to help you move forward.

If you’re reading this and you’re struggling, or if you know someone who is, Nick’s journey shows what’s possible. We’re here. We believe change is possible. And we’ll walk alongside you while it happens.
