The Discovery Academy: Community Rehab
What is a Community Rehab Programme?
A Community Rehab is a structured, therapeutic programme that supports people to recover from substance use while living at home. Unlike residential rehab, where individuals stay on-site 24/7, community rehab allows people to engage in intensive treatment during the day while remaining connected to their family, home, and community life.
It offers many of the same elements as residential treatment — such as group therapy, structured routines, relapse prevention, and trauma-informed care — but does so in a non-residential setting.
🏡 Community rehab takes place:
-
In local recovery hubs (like Nightingales Recovery Hub)
-
On a daily or structured weekly timetable
-
Over a fixed duration (e.g. 12 weeks for the Discovery Academy)
-
While the individual continues to live in their own home
I spent 28 years in addiction and never thought recovery was possible. The Discovery Academy changed that. It helped me believe in myself again, taught me that there’s good in me, and gave me the confidence to use it. I’m not the same person—I’m open, happy, and finally proud of who I am.
How is Community Rehab Different from Residential Rehab?
| Aspect | Community Rehab | Residential Rehab |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | Live at home | Live on-site full-time |
| Delivery | Day programme (e.g. 10am–3pm) | 24/7 structured environment |
| Cost | Usually free or low-cost via local services | Often expensive (unless funded) |
| Accessibility | Local – easier to access and more flexible | Requires relocation and long-term commitment |
| Length | Typically 6–12 weeks, part-time | Typically 4–12 weeks, full-time |
| Support Network | Stay connected to family, friends, and community | Separated from existing environment |
| Focus | Recovery in the community | Recovery away from the community |
| Suitability | Best for people with some stability (e.g. housing) | Best for those needing immediate break from chaos |
Benefits of Community Rehab
✅ Stay Connected
Participants stay close to their children, families, social workers, pets, housing, and responsibilities — helping reduce disruption and build recovery in context.
✅ Real-World Recovery
It allows people to build recovery in the environment where they live, with real-life pressures and triggers — giving them the tools to manage these in real time, with support.
✅ More Accessible
Community rehab is often easier to access and less stigmatising than residential options. There are no beds to wait for, and participants don’t need to leave their lives behind.
✅ Step-Up/Step-Down Flexibility
It can be:
-
A step-down from residential rehab, helping people reintegrate into everyday life
-
A step-up from groupwork or early recovery support, for those needing more structure
✅ Cost-Effective
Because there’s no residential element, community rehab is significantly more affordable — often available for free through local drug and alcohol services like Wirral Ways.
Why Community Rehab Works
Recovery doesn’t just happen behind closed doors. For many people, learning how to live in recovery within their everyday environment is one of the most important skills they can develop.
Community rehab helps people:
-
Rebuild trust with families
-
Remain in employment or education where appropriate
-
Access peer support locally
-
Practice recovery tools in real-world situations
-
Create recovery networks where they live
Community Rehab Is Ideal For People Who…
- Are motivated and ready for structured support
- Have stable accommodation or safe living conditions
- Want to stay connected to family and local services
- Have previously attended treatment or early recovery groups
- Can commit to a structured daytime programme
What is the Discovery Academy?
The Discovery Academy is a comprehensive community rehab programme delivered by Wirral Ways, designed to support people transitioning from active substance use to long-term, meaningful recovery.
It includes three distinct but connected phases:
-
Pre-Academy – Stabilisation, motivation and readiness
-
Discovery Academy (12-week full-time rehab) – Structured therapeutic recovery programme
-
Post-Academy & Alumni Support – Ongoing support, community, and reintegration
The Academy helps participants rebuild their lives from the inside out, with trauma-informed care, creative therapies, groupwork, and personalised wellness planning. It’s about recovering what was lost — and discovering who you really are.
I’d been close to death twice before I found the Academy. It’s helped me understand why I was in addiction and how to move forward. I’ve come out of my shell and feel more confident and grateful than ever. Now, I want to give back and help others the way I was helped.

I was scared to start, afraid I’d fail after years of relapse—but CGL never gave up on me. The Academy helped me find myself, grow my recovery circle, and feel comfortable in my own skin. I’ve now signed up for more training and want to share this with others. This is just the beginning.
