Aftercare Support

Ongoing recovery support at Wirral Ways

Recovery does not stop when structured treatment ends. Our After Care Service, also known as Recovery Support, is here to help you maintain your progress and build a stable, meaningful life beyond treatment.

Our mission

We provide support, encouragement and motivation for people who are newly in recovery from substance dependency. For many people this means abstinence, but recovery looks different for everyone. We work alongside you to help you stay focused on your goals, whatever they may be.

Every member of the team brings lived experience of substance use and recovery. That means we understand the challenges, the setbacks and the small victories. Most importantly, it means we offer empathy, honesty and real understanding, without judgement.

What support looks like

When you move from structured treatment into After Care, you will usually stay with us for three months. If you need longer, this can be extended for a further three months so you feel fully supported.

You will have a named keyworker who will:

  • Offer at least monthly appointments, either in person or over the phone

  • Increase contact if you need more support

  • Be available during working hours so you do not have to wait for your next appointment to ask for help

We know that early recovery can feel fragile. Having someone you can reach out to can make all the difference.

Groups and recovery sessions

Our dedicated Recovery Champion, supported by volunteers, provides additional recovery-focused sessions including:

  • Support during your first week of ambulatory detox

  • Weekly RISE sessions (Recovery, Independence, Support and Empowerment) for people who are abstinent

RISE sessions explore topics such as attachment styles, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy principles, managing emotional dysregulation, coping with intrusive thoughts and challenging unhelpful thinking patterns. These sessions are practical, supportive and focused on helping you build long-term resilience.

We also facilitate Post-Academy groups to help you continue building on the skills and confidence gained during structured programmes.

Connecting you to the right support

Recovery is about more than substance use. We can help you access wider support, including referrals to:

  • Housing Support

  • Employment and Training Support

  • Our COPD team

  • External partners such as Wirral Mind, Spider Project and Tomorrow’s Women

We look at the bigger picture so that your recovery is supported in every area of your life.

A compassionate, person-centred approach

Above all, we offer emotional and psychological support with compassion and respect. We listen. We value your voice. We recognise your strengths.

If you are moving on from structured treatment and want to feel supported as you build your recovery, our After Care Service is here to walk alongside you.

Get Involved with our Programmes & Groups

Groupwork and structured programmes play a vital role in sustaining recovery. Being part of a group helps reduce isolation, build confidence and strengthen accountability. Sharing experiences with others who understand can create a powerful sense of connection and belonging. Our sessions provide a safe, supportive space to learn new coping strategies, explore personal growth and stay focused on your goals. Recovery is not something you have to do alone, and connection is often the key to keeping it going.
