Volunteer Lead

My name’s Vicky and I’m now an Outreach Worker. I started my journey with Wirral Ways back in 2020 where I volunteered in the Recovery Cafe for 2 years before getting a job. Volunteering gave me confidence and taught me valuable skills that helped me so much when it came to getting a job.

My name’s Jenny and I started off Volunteering as a Service User Rep. This role allowed me to grow in confidence and develop new skills. I am now volunteering with the Alcohol Team after taking part in the Level 2 Qualification in Recovery Work! The opportunities CGL has given me have been lifechanging.

Celebrating the Heart of Wirral Ways: Our Incredible Volunteers

Yesterday, we gathered at Nightingales Café, Birkenhead to honour the 29 incredible individuals who bring life, light, and lasting change to Wirral Ways through volunteering. This wasn’t just a celebration—it was a reflection of the strength, resilience, and humanity...

I have thoroughly enjoyed my placement at Wirral Ways and have felt welcomed and supported by every member of staff from the very beginning. I was able to explore a wide range of roles, from observing street outreach work and attending MDT and Near Fatal Overdose meetings to sitting in on assessments, visiting hostels, and accompanying clients to appointments. These experiences have given me invaluable insight into substance misuse, treatment options, and the realities faced by people affected by addiction. I was particularly interested in learning about the misuse of prescribed opiates and over-the-counter medications, which I believe is essential knowledge for all healthcare professionals to ensure safer prescribing and recognise when someone may need support. One key reflection from my placement has been accepting that not everyone is ready or able to engage with help, but I have been deeply inspired by the dedication of the Outreach Team and their commitment to making every contact count. I have also seen how stigma still affects people with addiction, reinforcing my belief that more education is needed across healthcare to promote understanding and compassion. Overall, this placement has been an incredibly positive and enriching experience. I’ve learned so much, felt part of a passionate and caring team, and enjoyed it so much that I’ve asked to stay on as a volunteer to continue developing my skills and knowledge.
