This year’s Wirral Public Health Annual Report 2024/25 casts a powerful spotlight on addiction – not just as an individual struggle, but as a public health issue that affects whole communities. Among the stories featured is one that’s especially close to our hearts at Wirral Ways: Katy’s.
Katy, one our our groupworkers who has lived experience of years of drug use, courageously shared her recovery journey in the report using Photovoice – a creative and reflective process where participants use photography to explore and explain their lives. Her story, is a striking account of how six personal images mark her path from the darkness of 30 years of drug use into the light of recovery and employment.
“I love my job, it gives me purpose, routine and pride.”
Katy’s reflections go beyond her own recovery. They offer inspiration, hope, and validation to others in similar situations. Her story is a reminder that the road to recovery is not linear, but with the right support and opportunities, people can thrive beyond addiction.
Today, Katy also took centre stage at the launch event for the report, speaking to partners, professionals and fellow community members about her journey. Her voice – honest, determined, and rooted in lived experience – was a highlight of the event and a powerful reminder of why person-centred, compassionate care must remain at the heart of everything we do.
At Wirral Ways, we are incredibly proud of Katy and everyone in our recovery community who continues to challenge stigma, share their truth, and support others. Her story is just one example of how recovery is not only possible – it’s transformational.
