As part of Alcohol Awareness Week, we were proud to team up with YMCA (Wirral) to host a brilliant community football tournament at Birkenhead Youth Club — and what a day it was!

The sun was blazing, the energy was high, and the atmosphere was full of positivity. From the first whistle to the final kick, every player brought their A-game, showing amazing sportsmanship, teamwork, and enthusiasm. With the heat turned all the way up, regular water breaks became just as important as scoring goals!

“It was brilliant to see so many people coming together in such a positive way. Events like this show that outreach isn’t just about support — it’s about connection, community, and creating spaces where people feel seen and valued. The energy on the pitch was amazing, and we had some great conversations off it too.”
Roy Smith, Outreach Worker, Wirral Ways

At the end of the tournament, every participant walked away with a well-earned medal — not just for playing, but for showing real team spirit and making the event something special.

We owe a massive thank you to Mike Barnes and Rodgers Mutandwa from YMCA, along with Wirral Ways’ own John Harrison, Peter Dicastiongle, and Ronnie Headford, whose hard work behind the scenes helped the day run smoothly.

Big shout-out, too, to Tranmere Rovers in the Community (TRIC), DownMac Electrical, and Councillor Tony Murphy, who continues to be a fantastic advocate for the work happening across Wirral.

Events like this show the power of community — bringing people together, building confidence, and promoting healthier choices through connection and fun. We’re already looking forward to the next one.
